During my last visit to Powell's, I had the good fortune of meeting the exceptional people who work in the Rare Book Room.  Once they discovered why I was taking so many pictures of books, they were more than gracious in helping me find beautiful books to photograph. One of the gems that was pulled from the back room was this worn, exquisite Bible dating from MDCCXV (1715, for those who can't remember their Roman numerals) during the time of King George I.  As I carefully flipped through the pages of the Bible, I came across a page with a leaf pressed between the pages. It was clearly old and discolored and tucked inside the Bible by someone long ago.  As I continue to paint beautiful old books, I'm struck by not only the history of the book, but also by the people who owned them - who read them, cared for them, and perhaps left a little something of their own to eventually pass along for others to enjoy.
